Rootscapes

Rootscapes is a modular wall tile system developed during a residency at The Mills Fabrica, Hong Kong. Responding to the urban heat island effect and insect biodiversity loss, the tiles are inspired by the masonry root systems of Chinese Banyan trees. 3D printed in ceramic, they mimic root structure to create shade and bark surface texture to encourage moss colonisation. Mosses regulate localised temperature and air quality, restoring the ecological texture that pollinators depend on and that conventional building materials strip away entirely.
