Alien Remediation
Alien Remediation are wearable bioplastic objects that can be engaged with for anarchic means. Through material exploration I intended to create objects that could be discreetly distributed and dissolved in waterways as a speculative investigation into ways of natural remediation of polluted aquatic ecosystems. Quarries across the UK tend to ignore natural reactive ways to undo pollution in favour of often harmful and resource wasting remedies. The water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) has been evidenced through multiple studies to be a leading agent in the bioremediation of heavy metal pollutants in water systems yet its illegality and its demonisation as an ‘invasive alien species’ results in the halting of this research. The resulting protest objects hope to deploy a discourse around illegality of botanical species and their remedial use and misuse.
